Founded in 2017, Australian brand Subtle Bodies was created from a simple idea: to make exceptional natural incense accessible to those who appreciate quality, tradition and simplicity.
There are no perfumes, oils or unnecessary additives. Each Japanese-style incense stick contains just two ingredients: the fragrant wood itself and a natural binding wood. This allows the character of each material to remain intact, from its scent to its natural texture and appearance.
The same considered approach extends to the brand’s incense holders. Handmade in Northern India, in the traditional metalworking region of Uttar Pradesh, each holder is individually crafted with slight variations in size and shape, making no two quite alike. Over time, the polished brass naturally dulls and develops its own character.
Subtle Bodies works closely with specialist artisans around the world, exploring the origins of each fragrant wood and the traditional ways it is prepared. The result is incense that feels less manufactured and more like an expression of the raw material itself.
Pure wood.
Traditional craft.
A slower approach to fragrance.

Behind The Name
In a range of spiritual teachings, the ‘Subtle Body’ is seen as one of many planes of existence or awareness constituent in all living beings. The concept of these planes within a hierarchy of attainment is a common philosophical element that can be explored in many traditions around the world.
