Our Story

Timeless, considered, and quietly refined, búl is a practice of thoughtful design guided by travel, material and form. Each piece is shaped by proportion, texture, and an exploration of the places, materials, and ideas that inspire it. Seasonless collections, natural fibres, and limited production reflect a ‘less, but better’ approach.

The name búl, pronounced “buhl”, references both the gentle resonance of a boat’s hull and a childhood nickname of the founder, suggesting journey, origin, and quiet forward movement.

The Studio

Based in Fitzroy, Melbourne, our studio is led by a close-knit female team committed to thoughtful Australian design. We work with carefully selected makers in China and Indonesia, maintaining long-standing partnerships that ensure responsible production and ethical, safe working environments.

The Collections

Travel and exploration inform each collection. Drawing on the journeys of búl designer Virginia Martin, native flora, architecture and natural landscapes shape balanced colour palettes, considered fabrications and textured silhouettes, with each season grounded in curiosity and place.

Values & Ethos

Our collections are intentionally small, crafted from natural and biodegradable fabrics, and designed to travel through the seasons. Limited runs encourage conscious purchasing, while the use of deadstock materials and ethical production minimises waste. Each piece reflects our 'less, but better' ethos: thoughtful design guided by travel, material and form.
